Design Wall Monday

This is yet another kit, this one purchased from Connecting Threads for $50. The pattern which came with the kit is called Fabric Dance. It will be throw sized, about 57" x 70" and uses 6-1/4 yards of Connecting Threads own line of very well priced and nice quality batiks.

At the top the ongoing Nana's Squares leaders and enders project, two more blocks have been added.

O Happy Day!

I think!

This was a UFO. About five years ago (maybe more) Lori was making an Ozark Maple Leaf quilt from Nickel Quilts by Pat Speth & Charlene Thode and I thought "I like that" so I made about 20 blocks and put them aside. You know how that works, right?

Images should enlarge when clicked.

I was inspired by Judy Laquidara to dig through my sewing shelves and find a UFO and finish it.

Yes, well. One down and I'm not telling so don't even ask.

The Fabrics

The blocks were made with scraps from stash and a white on cream for background. Two of the blocks were distorted horrors and IMO unusable, that left 18, so after considerable head scratching I thought if I set them on point 4 x 3 I would get a usable throw. This was perhaps not the best setting choice for this particular block, but too late now!

The setting triangles are Connecting Threads "Fox" from their Quilters Candy Mirage line, which was quite a surprise for me when it arrived because I bought on the picture not the description. We live and learn every day.

The inner border is an older Moda, still available if you search diligently. The little circles compliment the Fox (which does not play very well with others) and added a little foo-foo to what was otherwise an unloved project.

Final border fabric was bought for the purpose, the name is "Stockinette" and it looks exactly like knitting! Cool! Super-duper sale from Connecting Threads again also available in red, green and blue, I bought 6 yards for backing border and binding at $2.48 a yard and used it all.

Monday Goals

Last week's goals:

  1. Add extra border to Yin Yang throw and backing, piece bias binding. I ordered fabric for this, as I simply don't have what I need in my stash, so, not done and will not get done until fabric arrives.
  2. Buy boxes for stash Not done, next time we go shopping maybe at the end of the week.
  3. Continue to set king sized Yin Yang quilt blocks ongoing
  4. Play a little with a UFO if I get bored. DONE! :)
This is the backing, border and binding fabric I ordered, it will go on both sides of the chicken batik I showed here for the back, plus a narrow second border in front . It is a Timeless Treasures Tonga Batik, pattern is Confetti Flower and the color is Maple

Leftover from the week before:
  1. Choose and piece backing for Moda strippy from stash, cut and piece bias binding. Half done. The ticking stripe binding is pieced. I don't like the backing fabric I chose.

Here is my goal for this week:
  1. Bias binding, for the Yin Yang throw and the red and white quickie project I pieced this week, shown below.
Jay had a quilt like this at his last sew in and I liked it so much I made one for myself.
I think mine is smaller at 60" x 72", there are thirty 12" blocks. I used up some very nasty old stash for this and have a nice bright red from my stash by Clothworks for the binding.

I also used 2 yards of plain solid white from Connecting Threads. While I like most of their (inexpensive) fabrics and am very pleased with the quality of their batiks for the price, I can't recommend this stuff. It stretches, I had to make sure it was on top while stitching or the feed dogs completely distorted it. I guess while the 'hand' is nice the weave is loose. I shan't buy more.
